CATCH: a short play on bullying prevention.
CATCH, inspired by the modern student & loosely inspired by concepts from J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, was written by professional actress Ashley Shade. After writing it for over a year, the play was submitted & selected by the International Bullying Prevention Association (IBPA) to be presented at their 2014 Annual Conference in San Diego, CA. It was sponsored by in part by Sprigeo (www.sprigeo.com), IBPA (www.ibpaworld.org), and the F.A.S.T. Program of Morgan County in West Virginia. This performance was it's West Coast Premiere, and it was very well received by professionals, parents, and students from all over the world. The wonderful feedback, endorsements, and support from prevention specialists and our sponsors pushed this project forward, which had led our first tour throughout the state of West Virginia. The first portion was in conjunction with West Virginia Public Theatre (www.wvpublictheatre.org). Our East Coast Premiere was in the Clay Center at West Virginia University, as a keynote performance for the Annual State Wide Thespian Competition in 2017 for over 1200 students. From here, it went on to perform for 6 schools across the state.
Most recently, CATCH was performed at Cumberland Valley High School in Pennsylvania, where two students joined with a professional actor and the playwright to produce the first ever student/professional cast. That version of the show was performed for over 850 students, faculty, school board, and community members. CATCH has recently paired with the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center’s Educational Outreach to continue touring and writing individualized curriculum for schools across the state and beyond.
CATCH has been the catalyst for C.A.T.CH: Communication & Action Towards Change, a new business formed and operated by the original CATCH Team to write, produce, and tour with plays (and other artistic expressions), workshops and curriculum based on what is going on in the world of the modern student. Raw, honest, and thought provoking, this company is designed to connect education, learning, and activism fueled by the arts.
